อยู่ในอำเภอเมือง สร้างขึ้นเมื่อ พ.ศ. 2476 ตั้งอยู่หน้าซุ้มประตูชุมพล ซึ่งเป็นประตูเมืองเก่าทางด้านทิศตะวันตก อนุสาวรีย์หล่อด้วยทองแดงรมดำ สูง 1.85 เมตร แต่งกายด้วยเครื่องยศพระราชทาน มือขวากุมดาบ ที่ฐานอนุสาวรีย์มีอัฐิของท่านบรรจุไว้ภายใน ท้าวสุรนารี มีนามเดิมว่า คุณหญิงโม เป็นภริยาปลัดเมืองนครราชสีมา ท่านสร้างวีรกรรมไว้แก่ชาติไทยเมื่อ พ.ศ. 2369 โดยได้รวบรวมชาวบ้านเข้าสู้รบต่อต้านกองทัพของเจ้าอนุวงศ์แห่งเวียงจันทน์ไม่ให้มาตีกรุงเทพฯ เป็นผลสำเร็จ พระบาทสมเด็จพระนั่งเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวจึงโปรดเกล้าฯ แต่งตั้งคุณหญิงโมเป็น "ท้าวสุรนารี" มีการจัดงานเฉลิมฉลองวันแห่งชัยชนะของท้าวสุรนารีระหว่างวันที่ 23 มีนาคม ถึงวันที่ 3 เมษายนเป็นประจำทุกปีเพื่อเป็นการระลึกถึงคุณความดีของท่าน

I was driving from Surin to Prasat. About 10 kilometres from Surin I see this amazing building on the right side of the road. First thought was, this is not true, not in Isan. But it is still there. Late I find more information in Internet. It is Chalermkarnchana College, and not only one in Isan. They have one in Si Sa Ket Province and another one in Buri Ram Province and now in Surin too.

ถ้าเหมาข้าวหรือเหมาจ้าง..ต้องห่อข้าวมากินเอง บางทีเจ้าของนาใจดีอาจจะมีเหล้าเบียร์ให้เป็นสินน้ำใจ แต่ไม่มีอาหารกลางวันให้

ขอแรงเพื่อนบ้านหรือลงแขก เจ้าของนาจะเลี้ยงอาหารกลางวัน

There are several airports with the scheduled traffic in Isan, Buri Ram, Khon Kaen, Loei, Nakhon Phanom, Roi Et, Sakon Nakhon, Ubon Ratchathani, Udon Thani.

Udon Thani International Airport is approximately 280 miles (450 km) northeast of Bangkok and currently has domestic flights to Bangkok (Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang) and Chiang Mai.

Thai Airways International, Nok Air and Thai AirAsia operate from this airport.

Udon Thani Airport is near northern border with Laos and is used as a transit point to Vientiane, Laos via Nong Khai Friendship bridge.

Isan food is mixture of the Lao and Thai cuisines, but it has taken something from both. Very typical is the use of sticky rice that accompanies almost every meal rather than plain rice.

Popular dishes include tammakhung, or in central Thailand, som tam (papaya salad), which is eaten at least once a day, larb (meat salad) and gai yang (grilled chicken).

Earlier, construction materials were obtained from village´s natural environment, and they had to meet the requirements of the local conditions.

In Thailand, houses have been built of teak or similar oily wood, because termites, ants and other insects quickly destroy the soft wood. The roof was made of grass, as it is cool in the hot season; grass roofs are still used in many local workshops, such as forges.

The construction of a wooden house was one of the skills possessed by men of the village. In the past, all the son-in-laws had to build to his wife a house , it was proof of husband capacity. In the dry season, there was time for construction.

At the beginning of construction work, an offer was made to the phii of the compound, the supernatural guardian of the place, where the new family came to live, and the souls of ancestors were also invited to protect their parents in the new housing.

Nowadays, professional builders are needed: masons, carpenters and installers. Houses in villages, too, are equipped with opening windows, electricity and water pipes.

Earlier hand harvesting was the only way in Isaan villages. Nowadays harvesting machines have become for great help. This machine is an old model and many people are still needed for manual work.

The big harvesting machine are already used in some villages and they have to be the thing of the future.

Earlier buffalos were very important for thai farmers in their work. Nowadays machines make same work buffalos before.

Buffalo or ploughing machine?

Forty years ago, most villagers were against the ploughing machine and swore that the buffalo would never disappear from Thai villages. For 3000 years, it had been a part of rice farming, Thai culture, and it could not disappear unless Thai culture disappeared. However, events proved otherwise. The buffalo, as well as the zebu, have entirely disappeared from plains villages. The water buffalo is becoming an endangered species.

The buffalo was habituated to the existence that followed seasonal changes. In the dry season, buffalo were kept on the fields, grazing on rice stubble and grass growing on the dams. In the rainy season, when rice was growing, the buffalo had to be herded elsewhere, and it was work allocated to children. They had time for it, as there were no schools, and even later on, their school attendance was not considered to be important.

The buffalo is an undemanding animal, eating whatever nutrition was available in the environs of the village. In the dry season, the buffalo was satisfied with rice straw that would otherwise have been unused. Buffalo and zebu dung was used in seedbeds, fields and vegetable patches. Many of the informants pointed out that the buffalo fertilized the field even during ploughing, and in the water the dung was well mixed in the soil. Buffalo dung also harboured insects that were a local delicacy. By Matti Sarmela

++ Surin Town, or Amphoe Muang ++

Phrasart Muang Tee: Located in Wat Muang Tee, Tambol Muang Tee, this temples is similar to Phrasart Si Koraphum. There were five stupas on the same base, however, there were only hree left nowadays. When compared to other Khmer temples, phrasart Muang Tee consists of comparatively smaller stupas. Yet they were all restored in late Ayudthaya period and are in a good condition.

++ Amphoe Ban Phrasart ++

Phrasart Ban Phrasart: Phrasart Ban Phrasart is located in Tambol Plai, around 5 kilometers away from town. Although this temple is quite old and only laterite walls and ponds are left, it is strill archeologically significant.

Phrasart Ban Plai: Phrasart Ban Plai located in Tambol Chea Pleung, around 10 kilometers away from the town. Established since the 11th Century, the three stupas made of brick are located on the same base and surrounded by a ditch.

Phrasart Hin Ban Pluang: Located at the kilometers market 32, on Surin-Phrasart-Khab Cheung Road, this small temple is interesting because of its exquisite decorations.

++ Amphoe Khab Cheung ++

Phrasart Ta Muan Toad: Located next to Thailand-Cambodia border, Phrasart Ta Muan Toad consists of square stupas and base made from sandstone.
Phrasart Ta Muan Thom: Located along the river, around 200 meters from phrasart Ta Muan Toad, Phrasart Ta Muan Thom consists of three stupas and two laterite Vihara (or sacred halls), and a pond.

Rune is wondering why so many people like to read Nan and Rune blog. I think one reason is all those bad stories about thai-farang relationships. Scams, cheating, lies. But this one is very good story. I don´t say Nan and Rune is the only one, but one of the best. I want more stories like this. Bravo neighbour.

It is very well known fact that many farang men are interested in dark skinned Isaan girls. It is no wonder many of them live in Isaan with their girlfriend or wife.
Several of them are blogwriters. Here is two I read regularly. I think one of the best is Nan and Rune. Rune is from Norway and his wife Nan from village near Buriram. They are now living in Nans homevillage. I am addicted by this blog, waiting new posts eagerly.

Isaan Style! is another one I look almost every day. English teacher, Brunty, from Ubon Ratchathani writes nice stories about his and familys life in Isaan. Blog has also lot of photos.

Water Park In Surin

In Surin you can go to swim in Vaninnusa water park, near the Sezglat Radio station, apartments and beauty school. In September they were open only during weekends. Open 10 am. Maybe it is good idea to call first 044-520885. MAP

Children liked the place very much and me too.

Lifting Buddha

I was visiting In September Ubon Ratchathani in Wat Maha Wananaram temple. There you can see and experience something special. Lifting Buddha is little (30-40 cm) Buddha image. Amazing thing is you can and you cannot lift it up. Make a wish while you pray and ask Buddha to guide you if your wish can come true. Then try to lift the image, use both hands. If you succeed first time put Buddha back down and ask same thing second time. This time you ask Buddha to make image so heavy you cannot lift it up.

I saw many people try, nobody could not lift Buddha up second time. I tried mymyself too. First time no problem, second time I really tried very hard but no. Amazing and confusing. My wish - yes it has come true.

Travelling three weeks in Thailand, mostly in Surin, Isaan. In surin I stayed Hotel Majestic, in centre near the bus station. Service in hotel is wonderful, rooms are clean and very cosy. Roomprice is reasonable, 800 THB/night, breakfast included.

Hotel has swimming pool, little fittness center, karaoke bar, lobby bar, food restaurant and meeting rooms.

In the lobby you can use free Internet-computers.
Hotel has wireless wi-fi, it works in lobby and in some rooms too. I can recommend Surin Majestic Hotel for everyone visiting in Isaan and Surin.

When you like to eat delicious thai food in Surin go to
Chantong Thai Food restaurant near the bus station opposite The Farang Connection. Also Thai karaoke in the evenings.

Isan

Isan, also written as Isaan, Isarn, Issan, or Esarn; (Isan/Thai: อีสาน) is the northeast region of Thailand. It is located on the Khorat Plateau, bordered by the Mekong River to the north and east, and by Cambodia to the south. To the west it is separated from Northern and Central Thailand by the Phetchabun mountain range.

Agriculture is the main economic activity, but due to the socio-economic conditions and hot, dry climate output lags behind that of other parts of the country. This is Thailand's poorest region.

The main language of the region is Isan (which is similar to Lao), but Thai is also spoken by almost everyone. Khmer (the language of Cambodia) is widely spoken in regions near the Cambodian border. Most of the population is of Lao origin, but the region's incorporation into the modern Thai state has been largely successful.

Prominent aspects of the Culture of Isan include mor lam (Thai: หมอลำ) folk music, Muay Thai boxing, cock fighting and Isan food, in which sticky rice (Thai: ข้าวเหนียว) and chillies are prominent. Sticky rice is a staple of Thai Northeastern cuisine, and accompanies almost every meal.
